Application form, information and reporting facilities for scientific research projects under the Australian Antarctic Program and requests for Australian Antarctic Science (AAS) grant funding.

Heard Island Research

In the 2003/04 season there will be a visit to Heard Island. The scheduled dates are 12 December to 10 February. Between these dates the Aurora Australis will be conducting a range of marine science projects in the waters of the Heard Island MacDonald Island fishery. The major objective of the Heard Island program in 2003/04 is to undertake the predator-prey studies that were originally scheduled for the 1999 visit, and subsequently dropped from the 2000/01 visit due to shipping constraints. The coordinator of the predator-prey program is Dr Andrew Constable of the Australian Antarctic Division (tel: 03 6232 3558), and anyone wishing to propose a project under this program should contact him before writing their application.

Opportunities exist for terrestrial science programs to be undertaken over the summer. The numbers of researchers and programs, and their locations on the island, will be subject to budgetary and logistic support constraints. The coordinator of the terrestrial work is Dr Dana Bergstrom of the Australian Antarctic Division (tel: 03 6232 3442), and researchers interested in working on Heard Island should contact her before submitting their applications.

Final decisions about numbers of terrestrial programs that can be supported will be made prior to the Antarctic Research Assessment Committee round in October.
